tv   9 News Now Saturday at 6pm  CBS  September 8, 2012 6:00pm-6:30pm EDT

6:00 pm
we start off with breaking news tonight. heavy wind and rain barreled through nearly every part of the viewing area. we have team coverage for you this saturday night. we are going to start off with anny hong here in the weather center. there is still a lot of activity? >> we have showers and storms in the area, bruce, but the good news is nothing severe. no warnings right now and in fact, the atmosphere is starting to stabilize a little better. here's a look at our live doppler 9000. if you have dinner plans, but the umbrella. we have some widespread light to moderate rain in the area around the d.c. area and out toward the bay. south of us we are seeing more heavy amounts toward bowie, annapolis, getting moderate rainfall. farther south at la plata and
6:01 pm
south of fredericksburg, we are getting more heavy rain towards st. mary's in southern maryland. temperatures are now also cooling down. doppler showing the wider picture of this cold front that came through triggering showers and storms. we had some lightning but the biggest threat was the damaging wind gusts that we saw earlier. you can see we have some lightning strikes around the area but overall light to moderate rainfall. the good news is that he severe threat for most of us is over. we still very a severe thunderstorm watch in effect until 10:00 for areas in prince george's county, st. mary's in southern maryland and also in fredericksburg and points south and east toward the eastern shore. but it looks like temperatures have cooled down into the 60s around here. 68 downtown and leesburg but farther east, it's a little milder in the 70s right now. peak wind gusts, how windy did it get? highest one i found so far in
6:02 pm
virginia at 69 miles an hour in ashburn. dulles 63. gaithersburg around 60. we'll talk about the cooler and drier air that moves in and the hint of fall we'll experience. bruce, back to you. >> thank you. right now let's go to is surae chinn with a stage collapse. >> reporter: the stage and sound crew here trying to clean up all the debris all over the ground here. a lot of heavy equipment here. but they are trying to sort it all the place people enjoying a concert when there were high winds. a lot of the scaffolding it cleaned up now. some crewmembers on the stage had speakers fall on them
6:03 pm
sending them to the hospital. >> it got blown over. >> reporter: more than 1,000 people were enjoying a concert at the 22nd annual rosslyn jazz festival when they got a warning to evacuate. vendors frantically tried to pack up. >> bam it just hit. didn't even take a minute. told to us pack up. next thing we know, in three minutes, everything is blowing and tables flying, chairs, merchandise, people running. >> reporter: everyone evacuated safely but left behind was the sound crew, the large speakers toppling over hitting one of the crewmembers. >> we hear that he's okay. >> reporter: the partial collapse of the stage left scaffolding and debris all over the ground. >> they shut it down and after that we started packing up frantically and after that the storm blew and blew everything over. >> we heard a big boom, i don't know what it was though, and then we were trying to like run because we didn't want to get hit by no things flying. >> reporter: and very scary stuff. crewmembers will be here for quite a while. you can see a lot of stuff here. but we're told some of these
6:04 pm
speakers really heavy. about 250 pounds so if you can imagine some of that falling on top of you on your back, that guy though is going to be okay. so good news here. we're going to be here for a while, the crewmembers packing up and lucky that everyone got out safely. back to you. >> thank you. next we turn to ken molestina where heavy rains ripped off a roof in washington. ken has more from fourth and eighth. >> reporter: it's a good thing that anny mentioned things are calm for now. clean-up efforts are under way. take a look at this for an idea how strong these fierce winds and rain were. this is what used to be the roof of a building here off fourth and 8th street northeast along the 8th street corridor, it came off of the top of the building, toppled over the ground and as you can see, nothing but shattered planks, shattered wood remains. police have sealed off this area. they have crews out here starting to clean up the mess.
6:05 pm
there is still tons of debris in the area. it's dangerous to even walk through. i want to bring in a couple of witnesses who saw this happen. right now, this is mecca and chaka. come in, guys. describe this for me. were you doing a podcast across the street and what happened? >> we were setting up and we just i don't know happened to look up the wind was blowing and we just seen like a top start hanging off and then just crashing down like almost like in slow motion. >> reporter: what did that sound like to you? >> it sounded like a big pile of just construction just coming down because at first i thought it was somebody just driving bad and they hit somebody but when you look up and as you see it, boom, it's like he was in the earthquake. . >> reporter: nobody was hurt. that's the important part. we want to let people know that no one was hurt but this could have very easily ended up very tragic. >> it could have, man. we really couldn't tell if anybody was underneath in the first place. we were worried when it first happened because it all came down but the likelihood of
6:06 pm
somebody being there was low because it was raining really hard. no reason to be standing on the streets. >> reporter: let's show the folks here at home once again what's left here as we continue to talk here. just describe again what it was like when it came down. were people running around franty? >> no, it was more shocking. people were like next door, they came out and the debris was all in the middle of the street so stopped traffic for a little while. but other than that nothing else happened. this is the only place where it happened, like a earthquake in one place. >> reporter: there you have it, the crews are now working to clean up this mess. when you see this, you get an idea of just how fierce the winds and rain were. bruce? >> thank you, ken. good to see dpw on the scene already to clean up. checking out the power situation in northern virginia, that's the most damage it looks like in terms of no electricity. more than 107,000 customers are without power for
6:07 pm
dminnian. 60,000 pepco, i'm one of them, in the dark and bge reports 19,000 customers have lost power, 107,000 dominion. we have reports of a trampling incident in upper marlboro, maryland. we have a representative on the phone now. this all took place at the county fair. bring us up to date. >> yes. we're at the county fair and things are pretty much over here now. but it was at about 4:30 this afternoon when the storm just started to affect the upper marlboro area. there were about 400 to 500 people on the infield at the track where the majority of the carnival rides and county fair events were ongoing. when the annocement was made for everybody to evacuate the infield and to head towards the building which is attached, that's what was occurring, but when you have 400 to 500 people trying to evacuate all through one exit gate at one time, and in addition to the storm was now
6:08 pm
starting to affect those people. the wind was blowing, heavy rain, and there was some panic. some people fell. some people were injured. everyone made it inside. we evaluated about 12 people on the scene. of those 12, we transported four of them. one young girl had an asthma attack, and the other three were teenagers and two adults that had sustained some type of minor injuries, nothing serious. there was some damage to structures or tents here at the fair, one tent completely cam down. others sustained some type of damage. but this was a significant storm that came through. there was a lot of people on the infield that needed to be evacuated and they were doing so very quickly when these injuries occurred. >> mark, help me out here. it sounds to me like this was an incredible success given the large numbers of people that were out there. is it because you got warning in time? you started moving people before, you know, this storm hit its peak? >> certainly i think the
6:09 pm
timeliness of the evacuation played a role. we had several volunteer firefighters here recruiting our citizens to be volunteer firefighters. so there was a number of first responders already on location at the time. so they went immediately to he people and there was also some of the attendees at the far end of the racetrack that could not make it to the exit. they were being affected greatly by the high winds and the heavy rains. couple of volunteer chiefs from the marlboro station went over there and put people in their cars an sheltered them in place in their cars until the storm died down a little bit and then got over to the triage area. so i think it is a success that people were in place, evacuations were ordered and again, while it was a little bit of chaos while evacuating, you almost have to kind of expect that and unfortunately, we did have four people
6:10 pm
injured or become ill because of it. >> mark brady from prince george's county fire and ems, appreciate it. thank you. we have rick from dominion power on the phone with us right now. bring us up to date, what's going on out there. >> yes. the fast-moving storm that went through our service area today caused about 109,500 customers to lose service in northern virginia. we do have some reports of wires down and as a result of lines being affected by falling trees and branches, we are bringing people in this evening to do a thorough assessment of our system but we currently have crews working to restore the largest circuits first affected by the storm which will get the larger number of customers back on first. and we'll be working our way down through the circuits this evening. >> okay. give us some idea. you know we've been through this before. we have some experience. is this one of those kind of storms where the people that lost power are going to be
6:11 pm
without the service for a few hours? or are we talking about longer periods. it ma -- are we talking about longer periods is this. >> it may be longer. we're attacking the largest ones first so customers will be receiving their power back. but it may be into tomorrow before some customers receive this power back. and what they need to do is call and report their outage to a toll-free number 866-366- 4357. >> go to our website, wusa9.com tore that telephone number. thanks a lot for that. check this home video from college park, maryland. chris posted this on our facebook page. it shows ominous looking clouds hanging over the college park area. so far, we have not received any reports of damage from the college park area. this home video comes to us from a viewer out in fairfax county.
6:12 pm
we showed that you earlier. anny talked about the wind gusts of 50, 60, 70 miles an hour. here's a good example of that. young trees there withstanding that storm. some of the trees might have come down on those power lines. we have videos from nationals park. the nats game is head to the bottom of the 9th when the winds picked up and play was stopped. game currently is in rain delay mode. attendance over 28,000 people in case haven't heard, they shut stephen strasburg down for the season. before the storm came through 19 people were rescued after their boat overturned on the potomac river under the 14th street bridge. d.c. police harbor patrol says nobody was hurt. they say today's severe weather may have actually played a part in the boat's capsizing. as we head into break, a look at some of the pictures viewers have sent in to the 9 newsroom. upload yours to the wusa9 facebook page. davey johnson announced the shocking move this morning. he lasted just three innings in his final home start last night against miami giving up 6 hits and 5 runs but his final start was scheduled for this wednesday, the 12th, against the new york mets. johnson said this morning that all this hype surrounding this shutdown forced their hand. >> i feel sorry for him as it would be anybody to get memberly commit in a ballgame and -- mentally committed in a ballgame and he reached his innings limit that was set two years ago. so we can get past this and talk about other things for a change. >> yeah, i think this debate is far from over. here's a look at the final numbers. more than one strikeout an inning and the nats were 19-9 in games that stephen strasburg was on the mound. their game today against miami is still suspended, 6-5 miami
